Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day (more over here) and for the special day, we have a special theme live. Here is what it looks like:

Google, DogPile and Ask.com also have themes up. Yahoo and Microsoft’s Live seem to not have any logo live at this moment.

Here is Google’s logo:

Today is Martin Luther King Jr. Day in the United States, and many of the search engines have special logos up for the day. Google has has an artistic logo, with children drawing the face of Martin Luther King Jr. on a sidewalk. Ask.com illustrates their background with Martin Luther King Jr. speaking and pointing. DogPile promotes a Food Drive with Martin Luther King Jr.’s picture in the background. Even the Search Engine Roundtable has a theme for the day. Yahoo does not have a logo on their home page, and neither does Live Search.

Unfortunately for many, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is simply a day off. This day off though, celebrates one of the most important men in American history, and we thought we would take a moment on the OUPblog to recognize his achievements. In the post below we have excerpted President Lyndon B. Johnson speech which announced the death of MLK Jr. to the American public, from our online resource the African American Studies Center.

Mr. Vice President, Mr. Speaker, Mr. Chief Justice, my fellow Americans:

Once again, the heart of America is heavy—the spirit of America weeps—for a tragedy that denies the very meaning of our land.

The life of a man who symbolized the freedom and faith of America has been taken. But it is the fiber and the fabric of the Republic that is being tested.

If we are to have the America that we mean to have, all men—of all races, all regions, all religions—must stand their ground to deny violence its victory in this sorrowful time and in all times to come.

Last evening, after receiving the terrible news of Dr. King’s death, my heart went out to his family and to his people—especially to the young Americans who, I know, must sometimes wonder if they are to be denied a fullness of life because of the color of their skin. I called the leaders of the Negro community and the white communities, the judiciary, the legislative and the executive branches of our National Government, and the leaders of our city halls throughout the Nation, throughout the night, and asked them to come here to the White House and meet with me this morning.

We have been meeting together this morning.

No words of ours—and no words of mine—can fill the void of the eloquent voice that has been stilled.

But this I do believe deeply:

The dream of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., has not died with him. Men who are white—men who are black—must and will now join together as never in the past to let all the forces of divisiveness know that America shall not be ruled by the bullet, but only by the ballot of free and of just men.

In these years, we have moved toward opening the way of hope and opportunity and justice in this country.

We have rolled away some of the stones of inaction, of indifference, and of injustice.

Our work is not yet done. But we have begun.

We must move with urgency, with resolve, and with new energy in the Congress, in the courts, in the White House, the state-houses and the city halls of the Nation, wherever there is leadership—political leadership, leadership in the churches, in the homes, in the schools, in the institutions of higher learning—until we do overcome.

I have asked the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the leadership of the Congress, and the Congress to receive me at the earliest possible moment. They are in adjournment over the weekend. But I would hope that could be no later than Monday evening, in the area of 9 o’clock, for the purpose of hearing the President’s recommendations and the President’s suggestions for action—constructive action instead of destructive action—in this hour of national need.

I did not understate the case last Sunday evening when I talked of the divisiveness that was tearing this Nation apart. But together, a nation united, a nation caring, a nation concerned, and a nation that thinks more of the Nation’s interests than we do of any individual self-interest or political interest—that nation can and shall and will overcome.

I have issued a proclamation to the people of the United States which I shall read.

[Text of Proclamation 3839 “Death of Martin Luther King, Jr.]

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, A PROCLAMATION

To the People of the United States:

The heart of America grieves today. A leader of his people—a teacher of all people—has fallen.

Martin Luther King, Jr., has been struck down by the violence against which he preached and worked.

Yet the cause for which he struggled has not fallen. The voice that called for justice and brotherhood has been stilled—but the quest for freedom, to which he gave eloquent expression, continues.

Men of all races, all religions, all regions must join together in this hour to deny violence its victory—and to fulfill the vision of brotherhood that gave purpose to Martin Luther King’s life and works.

Now, Therefore, I, Lyndon B. Johnson, President of the United States, do call upon all Americans to observe Sunday next, the seventh day of April, as a day of national mourning throughout the United States. In our churches, in our homes, and in our private hearts, let us resolve before God to stand against divisiveness in our country and all its consequences.

I direct that until interment the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff on all buildings, grounds and naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions.

I also direct that the flag shall be flown at half-staff for the same length of time at all United States embassies, legations, consular offices, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and naval vessels and stations.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this fifth day of April, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and sixty-eight and of the Independence of the United States of America the one hundred and ninety-second.

Lyndon B. Johnson

That concludes the proclamation. Thank you, my fellow Americans.

I think most of you are missing the time this was posted at. The first response was over 2 hours after he had already created the thread, and it was verified that the website was online with the first few replies. I doubt a large site like rapidshare would be down for a time greater than that, let alone almost 21 hours.

Thread accomplished?

well rapidshare actually went upgradation.you can now see a new look in it.

I used sendspace.com and 4shared.com mostly…….Also stremload.com…..In the case of the first two sites the files aren’t deleted automatically rather it keeps staying there less you delete it yourself……Moreover 4shared gives you the option to preview mp3 fiels before downloading it………….Haven’t fiddle much with streamload so can’t say………Well both rapidshare and megaupload SUCKS!…..It’s only my majboori that i have to sometime use either of the two……

Macworld 08: iPhone update with Multi-recipient SMS, improved maps and more feature

Macworld 08,iPhone update with Multi-recipient SMS, improved maps, and, more feature

A software update for the iPhone, announced at Macworld, will add a mixture of new functionality and what many consider to have been oddly missing from the handset all along, including the ability to send SMS text messages to multiple recipients.  Jobs also announced the ability to configure up to nine custom home-screens, including adding WebClips bookmark links to the Springboard which act as shortcuts to that website, and the Springboard icons themselves are easily rearranged.  The iPhone’s music app gets the addition of lyrics-support (that are superimposed semi-transparent over the album art), while video footage can be organised into chapters and now supports subtitles.

iPhone software update

Google Maps on the iPhone has also been improved, with SkyHook Wireless supplying real-world physical location data that enables the cellphone to pinpoint your location, similar to Google’s Find Me service, and then offer directions.  Introducing saved locations is as straightforward as dropping a pin onto the map.

Google Maps updated

Add webpages to Home Screen

Multi-recipient SMS

The update - free, of course - is released today.

Google For iPhone Update

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

Google For iPhone UpdateIn an interesting article on CNET, Vic Gundotra – a vice president of engineering at Google, responsible for developer evangelism and open source programs – revealed that a new user interface for Google services on the iPhone would be announced at MacWorld only 6 weeks after the previous revision. (Do these people ever have holidays?)

Changes have now been made to search, Gmail, Reader, Calendar, Picasa and the newly released iGoogle for iPhone, to make them quicker and more customizable.

There have been a few changes to add “ajax-like” functionality to enhance user experience, including “near real-time” email updates (no need to hit refresh) and auto-complete functionality for email addresses. Google Calendar will also now offer a new month-at-a-glance view, currently unavailable on the desktop version, and the tabs at the top of the screen can also be customized.

Could Google Apps be next, providing Blackberry-like functionality to iPhone users on their own domains?

In addition to the official announcement made today, Gundotra also noted, “This app will work great on Android,” possibly adding further weight to last month’s earlier article, which suggested Google was using the iPhone to test its Android mobile applications prior to its launch later in the year.

Possibly the most significant announcement Gundotra didn’t make was in the comment, “One thing that bothers me is that (mobile) apps don’t work offline.” Google is clearly working hard to bring Google Gears to a mobile platform – could it be for iPhone or Android (or both)?

iphone update, iphone 1.1.3, iphone, macworld, ipod update, itunes update

Tuesday, January 15th, 2008

iphone update, iphone 1.1.3, iphone, macworld, ipod update, itunes updateIt’s time to kiss my beautiful jailbreaked iPhone goodbye and to surrender to the inevitability of the 1.1.3 update. Goodbye delightful shell access. Goodbye beautiful 3rd party applications. I’m upgrading for the sake of my readers–and hopefully downgrading soon after! Read on for the liveblog…
2:15 - Before getting started, I’m doing backing up parts of my iPhone disk. I’ve also put a few symbolic links in place–more out of hope than conviction that possibly I can use them to access my disk. I’m aware that the 1.1.3 upgrade will change my baseband software and that downgrading after 1.1.3 will probably lock my baseband and make it impossible to use my iPhone as an actual phone, so be aware of this if you chose to upgrade.

2:30 - I’m downloading the upgrade after having agreed to whatever terms and conditions Apple threw up there in iTunes. It looks like the download is going to take about 20 minutes total. Time to go get some Diet Coke, the liquid fuel of Champions. Direct download is here for the iPhone 1.1.3 restore file.

2:40 - iTunes says 10 minutes remaining…

2:50 - 37 seconds remaining. Schramm already has his icons wiggling. I am jealous.

2:55 - Fully downloaded, ready to install. I begin the update, with a heavy heart and a leaden stomach. “Preparing iPhone for Software Update”…”Updating iPhone Software”…..It’s at the part where I see the white Apple logo and the progress indicator spinning in a circle…Verifying updated iPhone software…Updating iPhone firmware…

3:00 - My iPhone has been updated and is restarting. I’m now being prompted for my AT&T/Cingular Account info. Hmmmm…. I have to enter my current mobile number, my zip code, and the last 4 digits of my social security number. Sheesh. Can you say BIG BROTHER?

3:01 - “Please wait while AT&T validates your account. This may take up to 1 minute.” As far as iTunes is concerned, I’m now in but Bologna is waiting for activation from AT&T.

3:03 - New Welcome message: “Edit Home Screen”. It tells me that I can touch & hold any icon until it wiggles (hi Mike!) and drag it to wherever I want. Press “Home” when done. Okay. RIP a major part of XLaunch’s functionality.

3:05 - Hmm. Isn’t this interesting. I connect via iPhuc and I can see my entire disk. No, maybe not. Darn!

3:10 - I go to Safari. I has an interesting new layout, with the bookmark add feature at the bottom of the page. It complains because having upgraded it no longer is patched to open local files, which was the last page I displayed.

3:15 - I’m heading back to iTunes, doing an option-Update and selecting the 1.1.2 firmware. Let’s see how a downgrade goes….”The iPhone could not be updated. An unknown error occurred.” The iPhone now goes into recovery mode. I have connected it to iPhuc and issued a cmd fsboot. And it reboots just fine out of recovery mode. Still running 1.1.3. I’m guessing I’ll need to do a restore rather than a recovery–and jailbreakable 1.1.1 is probably my best bet.

3:20 - Custom ringtones were not affected–neither the ones from iTunes or the ones from SendSong. The modem firmware is 04.03.13_G.

3:25 - Restore. I’m attempting to do a restore (not update) back to 1.1.1. Lets see how that goes. Nope, another error. Not happening. Tried again, another failure. Back to iPhuc and cmdfsboot.

3:30 Thanks to iPhuc, I’m back in business. But still running 1.1.3.

3:35 On Nate True’s advice, I’m trying the WTF method. I’ve manually used iPhuc to enter recovery mode, then did a filecopytophone of the 1.1.1 WTF dfu file from my 1.1.1 restore file. I then issued cmd go, connected to iTunes and tried the restore from the 1.1.1 file.

As you probably know, the ipsw files you download from Apple are actually zip archives. Inside the archive in the DFU folder is a file whose name starts with WTF. It’s this file that I used with the filecopytophone command.

3:38 Verifying Software…And I get the (expected) 1015 error. Now, I’m connecting to iPhuc and just issued a cmd fsboot. Maybe it will work? Nope, not this time. Still stuck in recovery mode. Trying again… Back to Verifying…If I get 1015 again, I’m going to try Independence. Connecting to Independence now…And it works!

3:50 Connecting to iTunes…iTunes says I don’t have a proper SIM (which I do, perfectly legal AT&T SIM). Back to INdependence.

3:55 I’m busy trying to jailbreak and get into 1.1.1. Unfortunately, jailbreakme.com isn’t quite working…Another try and I’m IN. Settings > General > About and I’m clearly running 1.1.1 and Installer.app is on Springboard!

Reader Jose writes: “Looks like you can get the lyrics to come up (assuming your song already has them) by tapping on the “Cover” while holding the iPhone vertically. There is no lyric display I can find in the horizontal “Cover Flow” mode or in the “Song List” mode.”

4:05 I’m reinstalling both the BSD Subsystem and SSH under 1.1.1 for the moment.

4:10 I’ve OktoPrepped and added another symlink and am reupgrading back to 1.1.3. Be aware that after you upgrade/downgrade that you will get INTERMINABLE “Wrong SIM messages”. Damn you Apple.

4:15 And I’m back to 1.1.3. That’s a wrap for now guys. More as I explore… (No, the Oktoprep and symbolic link were both complete dead ends. There is no working jailbreak for 1.1.3 at this time.)

Abscess, Abscess of Malice

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Brian McNamee told federal law enforcement officials that Roger Clemens developed an abscess on his buttocks around the time that McNamee said he was giving him steroid injections in 1998, a lawyer with knowledge of details of the case told The New York Times.

But three members of the Toronto Blue Jays organization that season, including two trainers, said they did not recall Clemens having an abscess in 1998, the newspaper reported. And Rusty Hardin, the attorney for Clemens, said McNamee made the same assertion to federal investigators — and that the two trainers also told them they did not recall Clemens having an abscess.

Clemens, who was named in former Sen. George Mitchell’s report on performance-enhancing drugs in baseball as having been injected with steroids by McNamee, has said he did not take any performance enhancing drugs. The seven-time Cy Young Award winner has said that he received injections from McNamee, who was his strength trainer with the Blue Jays and New York Yankees but that they were vitamin B-12 or the pain killer lidocaine.

While any injection can lead to an abscess, an anti-doping expert said steroid injections are more likely to trigger abscesses, according to the Times.

“It is far less likely that any injection of vitamin B12 or lidocaine, which is usually not injected deep into the body, would have created an abscess,” said Dr. Gary I. Wadler, a member of the World Anti-Doping Agency, according to the Times. “Steroid users tend to repetitively inject the drug deep into the muscle and this has been associated with the development of sterile abscess.”

McNamee’s lead counsel, Earl Ward, told the Times that McNamee believes the treatment of the abscess was noted in Clemens’s medical or training records. He said that McNamee would be willing to testify under oath about the abscess when he is scheduled to appear before a congressional committee on Feb. 13.

Clemens and fellow Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte have also been asked to testify on that day before the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform. Pettitte, who also used McNamee as a strength trainer, was named in the Mitchell report and has admitted using human growth hormone to recover from an injury.

The Times reported that in interviews, former Blue Jays trainer Tom Craig, former team general manager Gord Ash and team physician Dr. Ron Taylor all said they did not remember Clemens being treated for an abscess. Taylor said he believed if Clemens had been treated, it would have been noted in Clemens’ medical records.

Hardin said Craig and Scott Shannon, the other team trainer in 1998, told his investigators that they did not recall Clemens being treated for an abscess, according to the Times.

The abscess is not mentioned in the Mitchell report.

Meet an ‘odd girl out’

Five-year-old Mikayla Nelson is one of the many Campbelltown youngsters who will front up to kindergarten for the first time when school starts on Monday, February 4.

Mikayla will go to St John’s Primary School.

What makes her an odd girl out, in a sense, is that she’s actually looking forward to homework.

“I’ll love homework,” Mikayla said.

“I’m looking forward to playing with friends because I already know some people who are going to the school.

“Some of the people are bigger than I am too.”

Mikayla said she was preparing herself for kindergarten in two ways.

“I’ve helped people who got hurt and I’ve played with people,” she said.

“I think school will be fun.”

Phinemm Nelson, her mother, said: “This is the first introduction to what school is going to be like.

“It’s an important time for children to learn, because they are built like sponges at this age.

“I think Mikayla will be fine.

“She’ll probably be an assistant teacher.”

Mrs Nelson said her husband Michael had had tears in his eyes when Mikayla was trying on her uniform.

“I’ll miss not having her around though, because I won’t have a `coffee buddy’ to keep me company in my day any more,” she said.

Hula bowl, east west shrine game, hula bowl 2008, cactus bowl, raycom, 2008 hula bowl

Saturday, January 12th, 2008

Two-time consensus first team All-American center Brennen Carvalho will get his chance to bask in the national media spotlight this afternoon when he takes part in the 2008 Hula Bowl in Hawaii.

The Hula Bowl is an annual game for the nation’s top seniors to showcase their games in front of pro scouts.

Carvalho, a 6-1, 310-pound center, is a three-time first-team All-Big Sky Conference selection and earned first team honors from the Associated Press and Walter Camp.

At 21 years, one month, Carvalho figures to be one of the youngest prospects in Hawaii but his relative youth didn’t stop him from making 39 consecutive starts for the Portland State Vikings.

A native of Hawaii, Carvalho is the first Viking to be selected for the game since Tony Curtis was after the 2004 season. Curtis now plays for the Dallas Cowboys.

The game will be televised on the Versus network at 3 p.m. PST.
