“Dr. Lujan! Oh, Doctor Lujan, what happened to you?”

“In the t-tomb, Veronica! Mummies! And this! A Polaroid DVD Recorder with 160GB Hard Drive and ATSC Tuner!”

“Polaroid? I thought that company was dead. If the dead have risen, wouldn’t they be zombies, Doctor Lujan?”

“N-no, Veronica! Z-zombies are the b-byproduct of myths created under a n-near feudalist plantation system d-designed to keep the original occupants trapped in fear and poverty while mummies are a c-celebration of a traditional African culture, rising only to defend themselves from coff direct exploitation!”

“You’re hurt, Doctor Lujan, you don’t know what you’re saying.”

“I saw it, Veronica! I saw the 160GB hard drive DVR shining in the moonlight! I saw the dangling bandages of the entombed kings now risen from their slumber! I saw the DVD burner! I saw the ATSC digital tuner! I even saw an NTSC analog tuner like those they used in ancient times!”

“Doctor Lujan! But if mummies only seek revenge, that means…”

“Yes, Veronica. In my quest for history and archeological knowledge… I took the Polaroid DRA-01601A DVD Recorder’s manual from out of the box!”

“Oh, Doctor Lujan! What have you done?”

“Done, Veronica? I’ve learned that the Polaroid DRA-01601A DVD Recorder has something called YesDVD, which lets you record at the touch of a button. I’ve learned about the HDMI input/output, as well as the front USB and SD card reader, and Firewire, Veronica! S-video output, Coaxial digital, Veronica, I’ve learned it can record in real time, to a DVD+R/RW as well as to the hard drive! I’ve learned how to skip forward with a 30 Second Skip and backward with a ten second replay. I’ve coff conquered time, Veronica! Conquered time itself!”

“Oh, but the cost, Doctor Lujan! Sure, we can play music CDs, or DVDs, or view JPGs, but was it all worth it? I mean, it only outputs to 480i or 480p and doesn’t record in High Definition. Was it really all worth it?”

Coff coff “Help me bar the door, Veronica. Hurry, before the mummies reach us!”

“Doctor Lujan, please, just give them back their Polaroid DRA-01601A DVD Recorder so we can escape!”

“Veronica, they’ve broken through! Run, Veronica! Run! Run for your life! ARRRRRRRGH!”

Jeff gerstmann

Friday, November 30th, 2007

It’s being rumoured that long time serving Jeff Gerstmann has been fired for his review on Kyne & Lynch - It was said advertisers where not happy with the review, not so much the score, but the way the review was worded.

Kotaku got on the case,

Jeff’s review was certainly less than glowing. He assigned the game a 6.0, otherwise known as “Fair” on the Gamespot scale. The game is currently enjoying a Metacritic score in the 65 to 69 range, which the site describes as “mixed or average reviews.” According to our tipster, it wasn’t necessarily the score that was reason for Gerstmann’s rumored axing, but the “tone” of the review.

Gerstmann has been no stranger to controversial reviews, as his scores of 10 for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and 8.8 for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess had sensitive internet users up in arms. It’s now possible that many bitter fanboys may have had their wishes for his firing granted.
As our tipster points out, if the rumor is true, it could point to a distressing precedent at Gamespot and parent company CNet. “As writers of what is supposed to be objective content, this is our worst nightmare coming to life,” wrote the tipster.

Our efforts to confirm the story with Gamespot hasn’t proved successful. Our current requests with PR, Gerstmann and other CNet contacts have either gone unanswered or yielded a “no comment.”

This is starting to look true, and I’m sure many gamers will have mixed feelings about his dismissal.

Jimmy kimmel snake bite

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Recently we saw Jimmy Kimmel snake bite video on a live TV during a Kimmel’s show, while many people questioned it, the issue remains, how to provide first aid or treatment for snake bite when in the same situation like Jimmy Kimmel.

A poisonous snake was brough into the studio during a live talk show on a national TV and during the presentation Jimmy Kimmel is bit by snake. The ambulance comes and immediately gives him the first aid and takes Mr. Kimmel out of the studio to be treated from a snake bite.

John Henkel has published a very interesting paper on how to treat a snakebite in FDA’s site. He writes the following:

First Aid for Snakebites

Over the years, snakebite victims have been exposed to all kinds of slicing, freezing and squeezing as stopgap measures before receiving medical care. Some of these approaches, like cutting into a bite and attempting to suck out the venom, have largely fallen out of favor.

“In the past five or 10 years, there’s been a backing off in first aid from really invasive things like making incisions,” says Arizona physician David Hardy, M.D., who studies snakebite epidemiology. “This is because we now know these things can do harm and we don’t know if they really change the outcome.”

Many health-care professionals embrace just a few basic first-aid techniques. According to the American Red Cross, these steps should be taken:

Wash the bite with soap and water.

Immobilize the bitten area and keep it lower than the heart.

Get medical help.
“The main thing is to get to a hospital and don’t delay,” says Hardy. “Most bites don’t occur in real isolated situations, so it is feasible to get prompt [medical care].” He describes cases in Arizona where people have caught rattlesnakes for sport and gotten bitten. “They waited until they couldn’t stand the pain anymore and finally went to the hospital after the venom had been in there a few hours. But by then, they’d lost an opportunity for [effective treatment],” which increased the odds of long-term complications. Some medical professionals, along with the American Red Cross, cautiously recommend two other measures:

If a victim is unable to reach medical care within 30 minutes, a bandage, wrapped two to four inches above the bite, may help slow venom. The bandage should not cut off blood flow from a vein or artery. A good rule of thumb is to make the band loose enough that a finger can slip under it.

A suction device may be placed over the bite to help draw venom out of the wound without making cuts. Suction instruments often are included in commercial snakebite kits.
When watching the Jimmy Kimmel snake bite video it is clearly seen that his actions may have attracted snake’s attention. Writing about avoiding snake bites John Henkel in the same research paper says the following “Leave snakes alone. Many people are bitten because they try to kill a snake or get a closer look at it.”

Swiss chard

ANSWERS FROM THE URBAN HOMESTEAD
Q. I’ve been catching up on your posts and would love to know what is in the swiss chard salad. I have chard in my garden right now and would love another way to use it. Thanks!!

A.  Thanks Mia for your wanting the recipe.  Having cooked from scratch with homegrown ingredients ever since I was 13,  I sometimes think to myself I really should publish a cookbook recalling my teenage days when the summer harvest would come in and I’d be stuck with a bunch of this and that and having no prior culinary experience (and no Internet) had to find recipes or make up my own.   Perhaps one day.

Here’s the recipe, it’s really very, very simple.

Anaїs’ Simple Swiss Chard Salad

Cupful handfuls of freshly picked Swiss chard (ruby red or bright lights varieties are my favorite and make stunning contrast against the dark green leaves)

Hold swiss chard bunch tightly in one hand and slice into shreds (stem and all - the stems are what give this salad a delicate crunch)

Drizzle homemade Italian dressing  (make either with balsamic or raw apple cider vinegar - both work and you may like one over the other) or any organic store bought just enough to completely coat shredded leaves and steams.   Toss and refrigerate for about 45 minutes.  That’s it.

Variations: sprinkle with lightly roasted sesame seeds.

Oh, btw.  For those who inquired to know more about the urban homestead’s unplugged kitchen sometime ago.  I hope you all haven’t felt slighted.  I haven’t had time to answer because I am waiting for some goods to be featured on the PEDDLERS WAGON before I write about it.   I promise there’s a post in the works…. as always stay tuned.

Q. I love your site, I learn so much from every post!
I have a question - might be a silly one, I don’t know - we always buy large pumpkins in October for the front porch… People tell me that the pumpkin isn’t good to eat, only the seeds. Can we eat these large pumpkins, too? I’ve only used smaller ones for pies, but maybe these can be grilled or something? - Anita

A. Hello Anita, thanks for your questions and positive compliments.  Certainly does help to get feedback which inspires us to continue our commitment in sharing our journey.

No, you have asked a very good question.   They are both right and wrong.    Wrong, because you can eat them.  Right in that these pumpkins are raised primarily for decorative purposes, and the bigger they are the less they taste like true pumpkins.   Having salvaged quite a few “pumpkin” displays  over the years from local supermarkets, I can tell you that they taste nothing like homegrown.   These “display” pumpkins have been “watered down in taste.”  So yes, you can eat them but they really don’t taste like much.   I also find that their interior flesh is more stringy, which makes a lumpy pumpkin pie.  Grilled pumpkin sounds good, perhaps even pumpkin butter.  I usually use the pumpkin  to make baked goods (bread, muffins, etc.), which seems to “mask” the stringiness.

Any other recipe suggestions for “display pumpkins,” readers?

Q. ? for you. I live in MN and we air dry all our laundry outside in all seasons except Winter. We want to start doing that in Winter also, but am concerned about how to do it where we keep the temp @ 60F. Any ideas on how best to do in the house? - Devine

A.  Devin, thanks for your question.   I’m sorta at a disadvantage answering such a question living in So Cal where winters are reasonably mild.  Perhaps bone-fide winter climate readers can weigh in.

We have a few wood dryer racks and if space is tight I would suggest the LAUNDRY AIRER from England (PW plug!)  or any clothes drying rack.

Secret plan to to withdraw form Iraq? - The Huddle Fantasy Football Forums
Click here to print10/07/05 - News sectionSecret Plan To Quit IraqEXCLUSIVE By Simon Walters, Mail on SundayBritain And America are secretly preparing to withdraw most of their troops from Iraq - despite warnings of the grave consequences for the region, The Mail on Sunday has learned.A secret paper written by Defence Secretary John Reid for Tony Blair reveals that many of the 8,500 British troops in Iraq are set to be brought home within three months, with most of the rest returning six months later. The leaked document, marked Secret: UK Eyes Only, appears to fly in the face of Mr Blair and President Bush’s pledges that Allied forces will not quit until Iraq’s own forces are strong enough to take control of security. If British troops pull out, other members of the Alliance are likely to follow.

The memo says other international forces in Southern Iraq currently under British control will have to be handled carefully if Britain withdraws.

It says they will not feel safe and may also leave.Embarrassingly, the document says the Americans are split over the plan - and it suggests one of the reasons for getting British troops out is to save money.

Mr Reid says cutting UK troop numbers to 3,000 by the middle of next year will save £500 million a year, though it will be 18 months before the cash comes through. The document, Options For Future UK Force Posture In Iraq, is the first conclusive proof that preparations for a major withdrawal from Iraq are well advanced. The British Government’s public position is that UK troops will stay until newly trained Iraqi forces are ready to take control of security.

Less than a fortnight ago, Mr Blair said it was “vital” the US-led coalition stayed until Iraq stabilised, and Mr Bush endorsed his comments.’Military drawdown’Mr Reid’s memo, prepared for Mr Blair in the past few weeks, shows that in reality, plans to get them out - “military drawdown,” as he puts it - are well advanced. It says: “We have a commitment to hand over to Iraqi control in Al Muthanna and Maysan provinces [two of the four provinces under British control in Southern Iraq] in October 2005 and in the other two, Dhi Qar and Basra, in April 2006.”This in turn should lead to a reduction in the total level of UK commitment in Iraq to around 3,000 personnel by mid 2006.”This should lead to an estimated halving in the costs of around £1 billion per annum.

Though it is not exactly clear when this reduction might manifest itself, it would not be before around the end of 2006.”Mr Reid states that his proposal is not yet a “ministerially endorsed position” - or Government policy - though he clearly believes it should be.Significantly, he underlines the serious impact on other Allied troops in the area now under British control, including 550 Japanese engineers rebuilding the infrastructure and 1,400 Australian soldiers: “The Japanese will be reluctant to stay if protection is solely provided by the Iraqis.

The Australian position may also be uncertain.”Mr Reid says he will produce “further and more specific proposals” for the Cabinet’s Defence and Overseas Policy (Iraq) Committee, which is chaired by Mr Blair. But some British Army chiefs are opposed to Mr Reid’s plans.

One senior officer claimed the Minister had no option but to recall 3,000 British troops in October as Britain has already promised to send an extra 3,000 personnel to southern Afghanistan to replace US soldiers.”The momentum for this is more to do with pressure from America and the woefully overstretched British Army than whether Iraq is ready to look after itself,” said the source.

“The timing seems very convenient.British wait for American lead”The view of most of our military people in Iraq is that we must not leave until the Iraqis are ready to cope, and it is by no reckoning certain that they are.”The memo leaves little doubt that the British plan to take their lead from the White House, where an increasingly unpopular Mr Bush is under huge pressure from the US public to bring American troops home fast. The paper says it “sets out what we know of US planning and possible expectations on the UK contribution, and the impact on UK decision making”.It says Mr Bush’s allies in the Pentagon and Centcom, or Central Command, are at odds with Army chiefs in Iraq, who fear it is too soon to withdraw in such large numbers. The document states: “There is a strong US military desire for significant force reductions.”Emerging US plans assume 14 out of 18 provinces could be handed over to Iraqi control by early 2006, allowing a reduction in [Allied troops] from 176,000 down to 66,000.

There is, however, a debate between the Pentagon/Centcom, who favour a relatively bold reduction in force numbers, and the multinational force in Iraq, whose approach is more cautious.”A Downing Street source said: “We have always said we will scale down our presence in Iraq when the Iraqis are capable of providing security.

But we will not do it before then.”The Ministry of Defence last night confirmed the leaked document was genuine.

Mr Reid said: “This is but one of a number of papers produced over recent months covering various scenarios.

We have made it plain we will stay in Iraq for as long as is needed.

No decisions on the future of UK forces have been taken.”But we have always said it is our intention to hand over the lead in fighting terrorists to Iraqi security forces as their capability increases.

We therefore continually produce papers outlining possible options.

This is prudent planning.”According to a BPIX survey for The Mail on Sunday, 52 per cent of Britons think UK troops should return home only when Iraq is a peaceful democracy, which could take years.

Eighteen per cent said our soldiers should return immediately and 23 per cent said they should withdraw in six months.Find this story at http://www.dailymail.co.uk/pages/live/arti…in_page_id=1770©2005 Associated New MediaCheating Bastages-35 man roster-7 man DTS-1 1/2 PPR league.Eli, Huard, Trent Green, McCown, J Russell, StantonSJax, R Bush, Rudi, Ricky, Lundy, Greg JonesDriver, Wayne, Javon Walker, Stallworth, Greg Jennings, Terry Genn, Moulds, James Jones, Clowney, KRobCrumpler, Scheffler Wilkins, LindellIDP

Green acres theme song

Friday, November 30th, 2007

She was Burlington baseball’s biggest fan 22.jpgand best friend.

At least one major leaguer called her his Burlington grandma.

When Ann Cook died Monday at 64, she left behind an extended family of athletes and behind-the-scenes players spanning decades and stretching across the country.

“She certainly had a passion for baseball, but even more than baseball, I just saw her as having a passion for the players as far as being their mom away from home,” said Laura Mitchell, treasurer of the Burlington Royals’ Booster Club. “She just really tried to make sure that Burlington was their home away from home.”

Cook was a fixture at home games since the mid-1980s. She and her husband, James — who helped found the Indians’ booster club — could always be seen be-hind the home team dugout.

“The players know we’re pulling for them, and they know they have someone in Burlington who cares for them. We can encourage them. We can boost them. That’s all we try to do,” Cook told The Times-News in 2006.

Her role went beyond her modest description.

To Cook, it meant caring for players, often away from home for the first time in their lives, welcom-ing their families to town and even mailing news clippings and letters to faraway families who couldn’t make it to games here.

Not content to let the players rise through the ranks of the Cleveland Indians’ system alone, she often traveled to games far beyond Bur-lington to see them. She was also a fixture at spring training, and delighted in seeing players again after the winter.

Kristi Parker, known for singing the “Green Acres” theme song at home games, first met Cook in 1993 when she began attending games.

“Eleven years ago, she and I flew to … Texas, to go see the (Cleve-land) Indians play the Rangers. It was Jim Thome and Manny Rami-rez and one of the Giles boys. They saw her and their faces lit up as soon as they saw her,” Parker said. “Those big, professional baseball players loved Ann Cook. The rea-son, I guess, is that she genuinely loved all of the players that came through here.”

Manny Ramirez still called her his “Grandma from Burlington,” daughter Amy Cook said.
Burlington Athletic Stadium won’t be the same without her, folks say.

“It’s hard to imagine being at the park and Ann not being there,” Mitchell said. “It’s kind of like Cracker Jacks, peanuts and Ann Cook. She was just always there.”

Mark Cryan, the Burlington In-dians’ former general manager, said her dedication helped make the club successful.

“She was part of the fabric of life at the ballpark. She was baseball’s No. 1 fan in Burlington,” Cryan said. “I’m sad to see her go. It’s a part of what the Burlington Indians were. It’s another piece of that period gone.”

The Cleveland Indians’ home of-fice knew and welcomed Cook, and folks there were saddened by news of her death Tuesday, he said. Cryan will serve as a pallbearer at her funeral Thursday.

Baseball was always in her blood.

She enjoyed major league games as well as old Burlington Bees games. When the team returned as the Indians in 1986, she became a regular attendee with friend Anne Trousdell. The pair were dubbed The Baseball Anns.

More than once, Cook’s devotion to the game took her to extraordi-nary lengths.

A trip to an Atlanta Braves home game seven years ago had the fanatic blocking traffic to get the autograph of one of her favorite players. Favorite Tom Glavine wasn’t giving autographs after the game. Disappointed, she and James left the stadium.

“Everybody was leaving the ball-park, and traffic was stopped,” Amy Cook said. “She and dad see Tom Glavine sitting in his car in stopped traffic. My mom takes off running across three lanes of traffic and knocked on his window. She said, ‘Can I have the autograph now?’ He gave it to her.”

Even an eight-month battle with cancer couldn’t keep her from the team and game she loved most. As the Indians became the Royals this year, Cook rooted for the team from her usual seat behind the third-base dugout.

“She was determined, even through her sickness. When we didn’t think there was any way she could make it to that baseball game, she made it,” Amy Cook said. “That was the one place she had to be.”
